The Hellfreaks really do get better with each release.
Pitch Black Sunset is no exception to that. From front to back, this album is full of banger after banger. From ‘Old Tomorrows’ to ‘PBSS’ it’s just a full frontal, full-on hardcore/punk/metal assault on all the senses.
Sue’s vocals are the strongest, and most dynamic they have ever been. Her strongest vocal performance easily comes on the dark and atmospheric ‘Weeping Willow’ where her vocal ability is really showcased before ripping into the signature Hellfreaks sound in the back half of the song.
Sue has evolved her ability beyond her neo punk vocals to this erratic anthem “Old Tomorrows”, which dives into some sounds we haven’t heard before. And we can’t forget the support, they all set this album on fire with some amazing musicianship!
‘CHAOS’….. Is arguably one of the coolest transitional “chaotically” written songs I’ve heard in a while. It’s a banger that travels at a million miles an hour, then sits you on your ass for a moment, only to throw you back into the wolf's den.
This album as a whole, is a definite evolution from their previous album God On the Run. Which was fantastic on its own as well. With this new album though, it really sounds like The Hellfreaks are prepped and primed to really elevate their game to the next level, especially with a powerhouse record label Napalm Records behind them on this one. No doubt this is going in my top albums of the year.
The Hellfreaks get better all the time, and this album is proof of that. Stop sleeping on the Hellfreaks, and start paying attention. They are going to cause ‘Chaos’ worldwide, and leave ‘Body Bags’ in their wake..
Overall, this album should take you places that you haven’t explored before. LIsten up! HELLFREAKS is something you need on regular rotation!!
Stay Furious,
Bill
