Album Review: The Unguided - 616

I've been a fan of The Unguided since I first stumbled on their music for 'Inception' shortly after it came out way back in 2014. I've been following them since, and keep their songs in regular rotation on my playlists, including the original versions of the songs that have been re-recorded, and re-imagined for this new release “616” that just dropped on Napalm Records.

Their original singer, Roland Johansson, left the band in 2016. Which led to the band bringing in Jonathon Thorpenberg to fill in for the void that was left behind by the departure of Roland. Jonathon has since shown that he was more than capable of filling that space with his own sound.

For this release 'Eye of the Thylacine' and 'Phoenix Down' were re-recorded in their entirety. 'Unguided Entity' and 'Iceheart Fragment' were re-imagined. All tracks now feature Jonathon on main vocal duties. These are arguably the tracks that really helped cement The Unguided's place in the modern metal landscape.

The production on these tracks sounds fantastic, Jonathon's vocals add a lot to the overall sound of the re-worked tracks. They don't negate the impact of the original tracks though. If you loved the original releases of these fantastic musical compositions, you are going to love the new versions as well.

I really hope that The Unguided make it stateside someday, I would love to see these guys live and the energy and passion that they put into all that they do.
