Dopesick: A Violent Happy Place Album Review

Rising from the ashes, Dopesick has so much coming up. As the band jumped into the genre pool, they came out cutting their own facet in the rough cut stone of music. They touch on so many styles with "A Violent Happy Place". You just have to check it out, for sure.

Screw the past, this is now, and Dopesick speaks volumes about it. Listen up.

As the story goes, every band goes through their trials and tribulations. This is no different for Dopesick. But, you can always find a silver lining in everything, as long as you look hard enough. And that’s exactly what Adam Albright, founder and guitarist of Dopesick has done.

Now, peeling back and dissecting the debut full length album "A Violent Happy Place" wasn’t easy, to say the least. The genres that are touched upon are so diverse, and tell so many stories, you may want to download the album, buy the CD, and take a long ride. This album will take you places.

Starting out with a nightmarish, fifty second intro, “What’s Your Name?”, sets a tone that you may walk into Jason Voorhees or Freddy. Track two, “Skin to the Bones”, opens up with a gritty riff that chugs it’s way into Jonathan’s guttural vocals. This song, simply put, rages.

Why” transported me into the Seattle scene almost instantly. Jonathan seems to channel his inner Cobain, and it showcases his diversity vocally. The opening of “Standing in the Dust” brings out the L.A. / London punk influences to say the least.

Slowly the pace a bit, “Phone Call to Heaven”, which Jon described in our 2 part interview with Adam and Jon, calls out to the lost loved ones. Listen to our podcast for more. Adam’s solo sparkles across the background riff angelically, with the song falling right back into place. There is an accompanying acoustic version of Phone Call at the end of the album, that is absolutely beautiful. Cameron Stone’s haunting cello addition to this version is amazing.

Picking it back up with no remorse, “Extra Extra” drives a nail into your earhole with it’s biting guitar riffs and venom spitting like vocals. This doesn’t stop here. “Freaks” which is honestly, one of my favorites, has an accompanying music video out that you can check out below. The guys have so much energy! Regardless, this song slams!

The snakey “The Big Ugly”, starts off slithering, but marches in like death troopers. Only way to illustrate this track….ORGANIZED CHAOS.

Mindslide” touches on the Seattle influence once again, this time feeling a little like Alice in Chains. Cool, dark, transitions and eerie vocals are peppered throughout the track. ‘Cleansing the Wounds”, comes back to L.A. punk with full force.

S.I.G.W.T.T.H”.......I’ll leave that one up to the listeners… This song stirs the thoughts and emotions.. You have to listen to this with headphones. It’s a trip. “Never Far”, threw me for a loop. Cool off tempo piano, accents with acoustic guitar and soulful vocals. Enough said.

Dopesick has shattered some of the stereotypes that have dogged some genres throughout the years. This album makes you rethink why there are categories in music. Music is what you feel, not only what you hear.
